Then he achieved a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with Honors from Southern Methodist University in 1973 and at the same time was honored as one of two distinguished graduates of Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps, ROTC, at Southern Methodist University. His medical training was obtained at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas, in 1977. Dr. Cord then returned to Lubbock in 1989 to help form Lubbock Bone and Joint Clinic. Later, after a merger with Robert King, M.D., the name was changed to Lubbock Sports Medicine to reflect the emphasis of the orthopaedic speciality group in Sports Medicine. He was board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1983 with Subspeciality Certification in Sports Medicine in 2007, the first year it was established.
