Dr. Crawford considers the designation an honor and is humbled that the Lubbock area chose him for this distinction. Crawford has served the Lubbock area for 15+ years and currently serves as Medical Director of Texas Tech Athletics. Dr. Field Scovell has been named the Official Team Physician for the Texas Tech Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams. Dr. Scovell is honored by the opportunity to be named to the position. However, Scovell is no stranger to Texas Tech Athletics. He earned a scholarship after his freshmen year as a walk-on for the Tech Football and then attended the Texas Tech Health Science Center School of Medicine. He also previously served as an orthopedic consultant to Texas Tech Athletics and is the Team Physician for Estacado and New Deal High Schools. Dr. Scovell has completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine of the Knee and Shoulder at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas. Stan Kotara, stood at the podium and watched as hit after hit played on the screen in the auditorium. The video replayed vicious hits from NFL, NHL, and other sports highlights where athletes, undoubtedly, sustained some sort of a head injury. The reactions of wincing and grimacing from the crowed gave insight into the veracity of the collisions. That’s how the 2014 UIL Concussion Update began. Stan then turned to address the crowd. “Pretty gruesome, right?” he said. No objection was given.
Stan presented his 2-hour symposium to discuss concussion managment to a variety of attendees including school administrators, coaches, and athletic trainers. This unique event drew attendees from around the South Plains ranging from Post, to Olton, to Seminole, as well as the local Lubbock area. Stan's discussion provided insight into concussion management strategies so as to educate and strengthen the ability to diagnose and treat concussions appropriately at the time that they happen. The ImPACT program an emerging authority as the concussion management program that is endorsed by major sports organization such as the NFL, NHL, and NASCAR.
The ImPACT program is a neurological, computerized assessment tool that is used to address certain symptomatic signs of concussions. The results of these tests are (anonymously) attributed to a growing database that is used for concussion research and further development of the program. This constantly improving and innovating technology holds the future of concussion management and we are proud to have Stan Kotara, PA-C as our credentialed ImPACT consultant.
